fine art commissions

So, you’ve seen my fine art portfolio, right?
Okay, then let’s talk about commissions.

COMMISSIONS FROM SOURCE PHOTOS
Please keep in mind that I never simply reproduce a photo as-is — otherwise why make a piece of art?

That being said, if you have a photo – or, preferably, a series of photos – you’d like me to use as reference for an oil painting or a colored pencil piece, I’d be happy to take a look; please contact me with a link to the image/s. Free photo-sharing sites like Flickr and Snapfish are an easy way to do this.

If I agree that your photo/series has potential as source material and you’d like to commission a piece of art based on that material, I’ll need a non-refundable deposit of 30% of the final price (see size and price listing below), and a signed hard-copy contract – sample contract HERE – guaranteeing that you have/grant permission to use the images of all persons depicted, as well as the images themselves. Your PDF contract form will come with a release form for that purpose.

NON-PORTRAIT WORK: the process

I’ll show you a compositional sketch for approval, and when the painting is finished I’ll send you a final photo for approval. I will not make alterations once the piece is finished and approved; you may decide at that point whether or not to buy it. If you decline to purchase the original painting I’ll offer it for general sale in my online shops and in art shows. You will be welcome at any time to purchase a print of the painting, or to change your mind and purchase the original if it’s still available.

PORTRAIT WORK: the process

For portraits, the process is similar to the above: I’ll show you a compositional sketch for approval, and when the painting is nearly finished I’ll send you a photo of it. You may request changes at either or both the compositional and final approval stage – at either stage, those changes will add two working days to the process. (If the changes are such that they take more than two days, I’ll let you know and we’ll negotiate an additional fee.)  I will not make alterations once the piece is finished and approved; you may decide at that point whether or not to buy it. If you decline to purchase the original painting I’ll offer it for general sale in my online shops and in art shows. You will be welcome at any time to purchase a print of the painting, or to change your mind and purchase the original if it’s still available.

General pricing guidelines:
12 x 16″ – $600    ($180 deposit)
16 x 20″ – $950    ($285 deposit)
18 x 24″ – $1200  ($360 deposit)
24 x 24″ – $1250  ($375 deposit)

REFERENCE PHOTOS WITHOUT COMMISSION

If you have potential source photos you think might interest me but DON’T wish to commission a piece of art, I’m delighted and grateful. Again, send me links to digital pics, as above – please don’t email images or send me prints! All I’ll need are the permissions and releases from any persons shown, and your release of any claim of ownership of the images. I’ll send you the necessary simple release forms; no contract or deposit are necessary in this case.

In any of the cases above, by law, as artist I retain copyright and all reproduction rights to any artwork I produce unless those rights are transferred by prior contractual agreement and an additional fee.
